Instruction

1. Task Recap

In this task, we are required to choose one idea from the task 2 sketches and then develop and refine it through colour exploration, composition, typeface, and positioning. Next, finalise the idea, complete it at A4 size, 300 dpi, and write a 200-word rationale explaining our ideas. Including feedback.

2. Development

Based on the initial draft, I first decided on the background color, then chose a watercolor-like brush to paint the texture of the clouds and trees. I think watercolor is a translucent medium that expresses the texture very well. I thought about doing a vertical flip in the composition, but then I realized it wouldn't be a good way to express my ideas. For the subject's color, I generally refer to natural colors and avoid overly bright hues to keep the picture from feeling too fancy.

Explaining

This illustration, titled "Tredunder," reimagines the relationship between the earth and the sky to explore themes of origin and perception. The primary idea was to invert the natural order by using a storm cloud as the "foundation" for a tree. At the same time, the tree's dry branches resemble lightning, suggesting its natural connection. Small details, such as the birds flying at the bottom and the sparse green leaves, were included to create a sense of scale and to suggest that this inverted world is a living, breathing ecosystem. The design uses metaphor for the "roots" of thought and spirit. It suggests that our physical reality and growth are often anchored in intangible dreams, ideas, or the divine. By placing the source of life in the sky, the piece prompts the viewer to question their sense of groundedness and consider whether their own foundations are as solid as they seem.

Design Principles:

Balance: A formal, symmetrical arrangement along a vertical axis gives the impossible image a sense of stability and grace.

Contrast: The texture of the rough, organic texture with the soft, ethereal cloud creates visual tension.

Emphasis: The dark value at the center of the cloud acts as a focal point, immediately drawing the eye before it follows the "downward" growth of the branches.

Unity: A restricted color palette of blues, browns, and whites ties the disparate elements into a cohesive, dreamlike reality.

Movement: The branches give a sense of movement, like lightning falling from the sky.

Symbol: The shape of the branches symbolizes the shape of lightning.

Feedback

Week7: Hi Yu Kai. The idea of reimagines the relationship between the earth and the sky to explore themes of origin and perception is clearly portray in your final design. Your Task 3 development shows a clear attempt to work through your idea step by step, with a visible progression from initial concept towards a more refined outcome. Overall, this is a satisfactory submission that reflects steady effort and a basic understanding of the design development process. Good job!
